<p><b class="titler">Avoid These Top 5 Workout Myths</b><br />

<p>Do you know the health and fitness industry is plagued by an over abundance of workout myths? A myth is a fiction or half truth, especially one that forms part of an ideology. Rob tells Jen about a new fitness program that is suppose to deliver amazing results; Jen tells Ted, and Ted then tells Pam, but only half<span id="more-68"></span> of what Rob said. Confused? Just image how confusing Rob&#8217;s &#8220;cutting edge&#8221; theory has become. And the funny thing is, Rob made this up by telling people they will lose 3 inches from their bellies, and hips by holding their breath for 30 seconds. Rob, without any scientific backing, dreamed this all up.
<p>The sad thing is most people believe what they hear from so-called uninformed myth spreaders. After consulting with thousands of people, I have heard every possible workout myth known to man, and continue to de-bunk myths daily. Listed below are my all time 5 favorite workout myths. Always look for the science and logic behind what people claim. Don&#8217;t automatically assume it is true unless studies back it, or specific quantitative results are shown.</p>
<p>After reading my 5 workout myths, you will be able to finally protect your own workout results, and share the fitness truth with others.</p>
<p>Myth 1 &#8211; Doing crunches, or abdominal work will decrease fat in the stomach area (If you do thousands of crunches, then you will have a flat stomach.)</p>
<p>This is what some infomercials preach. They state you can obtain a flat, beautiful, stomach by using their simple ab machine. All you need to do is exercise 2 minutes per day, and voila!</p>
<p>Please note, dear reader, you can&#8217;t SPOT REDUCE! By doing a specific exercise for a certain muscle does not make fat suddenly vanish. Fat is lost over time by burning more calories than the body consumes on a regular basis. Fat will then disappear throughout your entire body, and you don&#8217;t have control of where it comes off. Doing a certain exercise for a specific muscle will only guarantee a stronger, more fit muscle.</p>
<p>The SECRET keys to fat loss are decreasing caloric intake, increasing activity for an extended period of time, and incorporating a workout of strength, cardio, and flexibility.</p>
<p>Myth 2 &#8211; Lifting heavy weight for 8-12 reps will build big muscles (especially women.) You should lift very light weights and do a lot of reps, 20 +.</p>
<p>This is one that NEVER seems to go away. It keeps coming back to haunt me again, and again, and again. Ladies, doing heavier weights WILL NOT suddenly turn you into the Incredible Hulk. Your objective should be to maintain, or slightly increase your fat burning lean tissue. In order to do this you must increase the intensity of the exercise by elevating weight, number of reps, or decreasing rest time between sets.</p>
<p>If you increase intensity regularly, you will see good results. If you do not, you will get the same results you have been getting. Increase the intensity until you are happy with the progress you have made, and then maintain the same intensity level.</p>
<p>Women, generally, don&#8217;t have the physiological make-up to develop big muscles unless they use steroids, and train with gut busting intensity. Most men workout a lifetime, and won&#8217;t build big muscles. Ladies, please don&#8217;t worry; challenge yourself in the gym.</p>

<p>Myth 3 &#8211; For resistance training, you need to do 3 sets of 10-15 reps, 3 exercises per body part, and a frequency of 3 days per week.</p>
<p>Where the heck did 3 come from? 3 X 3 X 3? I think someone, many years ago, decided 3 was a good number to use, and people started to believe in this myth.</p>
<p>How many sets are really needed? According to scientific studies, the exact number of sets needed to stimulate lean tissue development is one, if preformed at 100% momentary muscle failure. A single all out set is the ideal stimulus to trigger lean tissue development. All other sets only hinder the recovery process when lean tissue develops.</p>
<p>Rest- people generally don&#8217;t get enough rest between workouts. Please be aware that the higher the intensity, the more rest is required between workouts to allow lean tissue development. If you workout (strength train) too soon, before you are fully recovered, you will short circuit your results.</p>
<p>It is better to wait longer between workouts, then to workout not fully recovered.You WON&#8217;T lose your muscle tissue if you don&#8217;t workout for 2 weeks.</p>
<p>Ideal rest times (depending upon intensity) are anywhere from 3 &#8211; 10 + days between strength training workouts.</p>
<p>You will need to track your progress to determine when your gains cease. When progress stops, increase your rest time even further.</p>
<p>If your strength keeps increasing during each workout, you are assured of getting optimal rest between sessions.</p>
<p>Myth 4 &#8211; All I need to do is cardiovascular training to be in shape.</p>
<p>Wrong! Please don&#8217;t make this mistake! Cardiovascular exercise is only one piece of the workout puzzle. To design an optimal fitness program, incorporate cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and flexibility into an efficient, results producing program.</p>
<p>Cardiovascular exercise will do very little to increase your flexibility, and maintain or increase your lean tissue. If you avoid any of these three components, you are decreasing your results by one third.</p>
<p>As a result of the aging process, on average, 5-7 pounds of muscle is lost each decade, that is, if you don&#8217;t strength train.</p>
<p>Myth 5 &#8211; All fitness equipment is good if you use it.</p>
<p>All fitness equipment is not created equal, especially home fitness equipment advertised in infomercials. Some pieces of fitness equipment are not well built, and can cause injury to specific individuals resulting from medical limitations.</p>
<p>My advice is to clear your exercise program with a physician prior to exercising or buying home gym equipment.</p>

<p>Are you tired of carrying that extra weight around your middle? Well, here are some tips that can help you quickly lose weight and inches off that potbelly. That&#8217;s right, there may be a way for you to have a flatter stomach without doing those dreaded crunches. Here are some things that can positively impact your midriff , helping you lose pounds and inches without<span id="more-65"></span> even breaking a sweat.</p>
<p>Belly Fat Busting Tip #1</p>
<p>Increase your protein and decrease your carbohydrates. Increasing the amount of lean protein you eat and reducing carbs can deliver a one-two punch right to the belly! You see, carbohydrate tend to increase your insulin level, which can slow down your metabolism. Since the body can only metabolize just so much carbohydrates at once, the rest is converted to sugar and then turned into body fat. </p>
<p>Of course, increasing your protein doesn&#8217;t mean overeating. Just have 3-4 oz of lean protein with every meal&#8230; yes, even breakfast&#8230; and eat the protein first. This kicks your metabolism up a few notches as your body must work harder and expend more energy to digest protein. Throw in an extra helping of vegetables to add more fiber and moisture to your digestive process, and that should keep things moving along nicely. This is the first step to quick weight loss around your belly.</p>
<p>Belly Fat Busting Tip #2</p>
<p>Reduce your alcohol consumption. I know, for some of you this may be asking a lot, but it can make a huge difference to your waistline. While alcohol provides no nutrients whatsoever, each gram of alcohol contains 7 calories. And 100% of the calories you consume through alcohol is stored as fat! That means every alcoholic beverage you consume&#8211; whether it&#8217;s a few drinks per day or a few drinks per week&#8211; is converted to fat, usually around the belly. </p>
<p>Now, you don&#8217;t have to give up all libations in order to bust your belly fat, but cutting back to just one or two drinks a couple of times a week will pay huge dividends to your belly fat busting account.</p>
<p>Belly Fat Busting Tip #3</p>
<p>When it comes to junk-food&#8230; pick two and you&#8217;re through! To bust your belly fat, you must become the master of your junk food domain! That means pick one salty junk food item, and one sweet junk food item to keep in your house. The rest of that junk food will simply have to go. Then give yourself only one meal per week during which you will eat a small amount of your chosen salty snack food, and one meal per week for your sweet snack food.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s an example. Once a week for dinner I give myself 7-large, restaurant style, plain nacho chips along with fat-free refried beans, 1oz of reduced-fat, grated cheddar cheese, 4oz of boneless, skinless chicken breast strips seasoned with packaged taco seasoning, some shredded lettuce, and all the Salsa I can eat. Add to that, colorful napkins and Celia Cruz on the CD player&#8230; and my wife and I enjoy a weekly, guilt-free, Latin Fiesta! </p>
<p>I have my fatty, snack-food chips every week, yet it doesn&#8217;t add an inch to my waistline. Why? Well, for one thing, I set the amount of this snack-food to a moderate level. In this case, 7-chips, which contains 140 calories and 7 grams of fat. Plus, I incorporated this snack-food into a fun and tasty high-protein meal. The fat-free, refried beans are protein, and so are the reduced-fat cheese and chicken. The shredded lettuce and salsa (tomatoes) are high-grade catabolic foods &#8212; foods that burn up more calories to digest, than they actually supply when eaten. </p>
<p>My weekly sweet snack is a large pancake and syrup on Saturday mornings. I have it along with 3 strips of turkey bacon and a scrambled egg. Of course, it could be anything sweet that you enjoy. A slice of apple pie a la mode, a candy bar&#8230; you name it. But again, eat it only once a week with a specific meal, and in moderation. Have your sweet snack as dessert at the end of a high protein meal that includes high-grade catabolic vegetables such as Broccoli, carrots, spinach, sweet potato, zucchini, or tomatoes. Since your metabolism increases 30% above it&#8217;s resting level to burn protein&#8230; and the catabolic foods burn up their own calories as well as some of the calories from any other food you eat along with it&#8230; there&#8217;s a good chance most of the calories from your moderate junk-food snack will be burned while your body is digesting the protein &#038; catabolic foods that make up the bulk of your meal. Having a junk-food snack only two times per week with a specific meal, will play a major role in busting your belly fat and trimming inches from your waistline.</p>
<p>Belly Fat Busting Tip #4</p>
<p>Exercise is another way to bust belly fat&#8230; but that doesn&#8217;t mean you have to do those dreaded crunches or go work out at the gym. Personally, I dislike structured exercise with a passion. And I seriously considered omitting exercise from this article altogether. </p>
<p>Although I am going to mention exercise, this is all I&#8217;m going to say about it. If you like structured exercise such as walking on a treadmill, going to an aerobics class, etc., then go for it. A half hour to 45 minutes, three times a week will certainly help bust your belly fat. </p>
<p>However, if that kind of exercise is unpalatable to you, then do what I do. I give myself a couple of projects to do around the house every week. Clean out the garage, hand-wash the car, sweep and hose the patio, do some work in the yard, etc&#8230; any activity that will keep you moving, reaching, bending, pulling, and contracting your muscles for 30-45 minutes is EXERCISE! The added benefit is instead of just having a sweaty body and some burned calories to show for it&#8230; you&#8217;ll also have a clean patio, a shiny car, a beautiful garden, and a neatly organized closet to boot. <img src='http://flattenyourtummy.org/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_surprised.gif' alt=':o' class='wp-smiley' /> ) </p>
<p>The point I&#8217;m making is, housework counts, yard work counts, garage &#038; closet clean up work counts as EXERCISE as far as your body is concerned. Just schedule 1-2 of these kinds of physical projects every week shortly after eating a meal rich in catabolic/fat burning foods, and your results could far out-strip that of the poor schmoe working out down at the gym. You see, any physical exercise you engage in after eating catabolic foods will continue boosting your metabolism and burning calories at a faster rate during, and for several hours AFTER exercising. </p>
<p>Rest assured, the exercise you engage in doing physical projects will burn lots of extra calories and bust more belly fat than you can shake a stick at. Of course, your aerobics instructor down at the gym may not give you credit for it, but your metabolism will certainly add it to your balance sheet by burning more calories, losing more weight, and firming &#038; toning your muscles.</p>

Add to that, colorful napkins and Celia Cruz on the CD player&#8230; and my wife and I enjoy a weekly, guilt-free, Latin Fiesta! </p>
<p>I have my fatty, snack-food chips every week, yet it doesn&#8217;t add an inch to my waistline. Why? Well, for one thing, I set the amount of this snack-food to a moderate level. In this case, 7-chips, which contains 140 calories and 7 grams of fat. Plus, I incorporated this snack-food into a fun and tasty high-protein meal. The fat-free, refried beans are protein, and so are the reduced-fat cheese and chicken. The shredded lettuce and salsa (tomatoes) are high-grade catabolic foods &#8212; foods that burn up more calories to digest, than they actually supply when eaten. </p>
<p>My weekly sweet snack is a large pancake and syrup on Saturday mornings. I have it along with 3 strips of turkey bacon and a scrambled egg. Of course, it could be anything sweet that you enjoy. Clean out the garage, hand-wash the car, sweep and hose the patio, do some work in the yard, etc&#8230; any activity that will keep you moving, reaching, bending, pulling, and contracting your muscles for 30-45 minutes is EXERCISE! <p>With this 10 minute exercise routine you can burn up to 150 calories every single day.</p>
<p>The first two minutes of this fat burning routine is: Jump Rope -<span id="more-57"></span> Begin by performing two jumps for each turn of the rope. Safety: Use the correct size jump rope and always land softly on the balls of your feet (that is the upper part of the bottom of your foot). Keep thinking I am losing weight.</p>
<p>Minutes two to three: Squat Thrust into a Push Up. The proper technique for this exercise is to stand with your feet shoulder width apart and your arms strait down next to your sides. Slowly squat down with your head forward and bring your hands to the floor just outside of your feet. Your hands should be pointing forward as well. Then in one movement, push your legs back and out behind you (into a pushup position). Perform one strict pushup and then jump back into your squat position and then stand back up. Keep thinking, the fat is vanishing.</p>
<p>Minutes three to four: Jump Rope with only one jump per turn. Keep thinking, The fat is melting away.</p>
<p>Minutes four to five: Back to the Squat Thrust and Push Up only this time you are going to add  the Side Plank. After completing your squat thrust and push up, you are going to lift and rotate your left arm off of the ground and over your head. Your left foot will rotate and rest on top of you right foot. And you will rotate your neck so you are looking up at your ceiling. Rotate back to the center and repeat on the other side. When finished, hop back into your squat position, stand up and start again. Keep thinking, no more belly.</p>
<p>Minutes five and six: Jump Rope. Same as minutes three and four. keep thinking, I am losing body fat.</p>
<p>Minutes six and seven: Back to the Squat Thrust and Push Up only this time you are going to add  the Leg Lift. This is the same as minutes two and three only this time you will lift the toes of one foot about twelve inches off of the ground only after you have performed your push up. Lower your foot and repeat on the other side. Hop back up to your squat position, stand up, and start again. Keep thinking, goodbye belly.</p>
<p>Minutes seven and eight: Jump Rope. Same as minutes three and four. Keep thinking, my belly is getting smaller.</p>
<p>Minutes eight and nine: Back to the Squat Thrust and Push Up only this time you are going to add  Mountain Climbers. Repeat everything  as in minutes two and three only this time after your push up, you will quickly jog in place from your push up position. Make sure you bring your knees up to your chest on each rotation. Perform 5 jogs and repeat  this entire process. Keep thinking, I am going to lose weight.</p>
<p>Minutes nine and ten: Jump Rope. Same as you first two minutes. Keep thinking. If I do this everyday, I will lose belly fat. Good luck to everyone.</p>

<p>Abdominal bloating is not simply an  inconvenience.  For those who suffer from it, it can be extremely distressing and at times incapacitating.  Quite often it is not taken seriously by medical professionals and dismissed as something that merely has to be endured rather than treated and cured.</p>
<p>Wanting a flat stomach is not always a simple matter of vanity. Abdominal bloating can be painful and embarrassing. When your stomach is constantly severely bloated it can undermine your confidence as well as your health.</p>
<p>But how often have you spoken to your doctor about your digestive disorders only for it to be diagnosed as just another case of i.b.s (irritable bowel syndrome) and offered no real solution to the problem? And although i.b.s. is an unpleasant condition to live with it is often used as a blanket term to cover every single abdominal problem from constipation to diarrhea, heartburn, wind and flatulence to name but a few.</p>
<p>It must also be pointed out that abdominal bloating can sometimes be a symptom of serious illness, however once this option has been eliminated by the appropriate medical investigations sufferers should consider the possibility that the culprit may lie in the food they are eating.</p>
<p>So where do we start?</p>
<p>In today&#8217;s hectic world few of us have the time to devote to creating the plain wholesome food enjoyed by our  predecessors. We have come to rely on ready prepared meals and seasonings to provide our dietary needs. Unfortunately along with the ever growing list of convenience foods is the endless array of additives contained within the package.  Much has already been written about additives, e-numbers etc and their effects on our health and it is not the purpose of this site to investigate other problems or<br />
<br />symptoms which may be related to them. The sole problem  we are concerned with here is bloating and the possible causes of it.</p>
<p>For although in many people abdominal bloating and not having a flat stomach will be regarded as nothing more than an annoying inconvenience, rather like waking up with a nasty spot on your face on the day of an important interview for example.  For others it can be far more worrying. The abdomen may be completely flat first thing in the morning only to  become hugely distended throughout the course of the day. Some sufferers complain of looking pregnant by the evening and are often troubled by crippling painful cramps.</p>
<p>So what is the answer?</p>
<p>Well in most cases, just a few basic modifications to the diet are all that is required to get a flat stomach. Of course most of us are already aware that certain types of food are known to cause excess gas, for example: onions; broccoli; cabbage and beans etc but how often have you avoided these foods and still found your stomach swelling and your clothes pulling uncomfortably tight?  You may have also tried other popular remedies such as peppermint tea and charcoal tablets which may help to ease the cramps but somehow never seem able to get to the root of the problem.  So that leads us to the question about other possible causes of abdominal bloating and particularly the role of additives in our food.</p>
<p>But why should additives cause bloating?</p>
<p>Quite possibly because our systems are simply getting overloaded by them.  Unlike the diets followed by our parents and grandparents, convenience foods play an enormous role in the lifestyle of today&#8217;s generation.  In years gone by meals were far simpler and usually prepared using fresh produce.</p>
<p>Nowadays we are more likely to buy a pack of ready battered fish rather than whisking together the ingredients to make our own. Spaghetti Bolognese will probably be made with the assistance of a packet or jar of ready prepared sauce instead of blending the herbs ourselves.  Even salads can be bought pre-packed with little sachets of dressings included.  The corner shops and market places that were so prevalent a few decades ago have been overtaken by super stores with a massive range of mouth watering convenience food and drinks. It&#8217;s no wonder our meal choices have changed completely.  So it&#8217;s probably fair to say that it isn&#8217;t necessarily the additives themselves which are the problem, it is the sheer quantity in which they are consumed that often causes the symptoms.  You could therefore argue that to prevent abdominal bloating all you need to do is follow a strict diet using only natural ingredients. That may well work for you, however in reality it would probably make more sense not to reject all convenience foods altogether.  Not only would that be impractical for many people, in most cases it is also unnecessary.  As far as abdominal bloating is concerned we need only control the ingredient that causes the problem.</p>

<p>Quite simply by a process of elimination.</p>
